Understanding Our Changing Coastline
A National Workshop on Coastal Risks and Resilience
The Coastal Risks in Mauritius and Rodrigues study, published in November 2025 and conducted by the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM), provides an essential scientific assessment of the climate threats facing the coastal zones of both islands. Launched in 2022 with financial support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the study was funded through a €1 million AFD grant and coordinated by BRGM in partnership with Météo-France, the University of Limoges (Géolab), and the University of Mascareignes.
Sea levels around Mauritius are rising at 4.7 mm per year—well above the global average of 3.4 mm—and approximately 20% of the population lives along the coastline. The study has produced nearly 50 high-resolution hazard maps for current and future climate scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100, including focused assessments for hotspot areas such as Flic en Flac, Anse La Raie, and Port Mathurin. Urban centres including Grand Baie, Mahébourg, Port Louis, and Flic en Flac could be exposed to submersion in the second half of the century.
Yet scientific data alone cannot drive change. It must be met, understood, and carried forward by those who live along these shores.
A national workshop is therefore convened by CEDTI, in partnership with BRGM, AFD, Expertise France, and Business Mauritius, to translate these scientific findings into shared understanding and collective action.
